Below is an excerpt from the book so you can get an idea what it is about:
There is pain and grief in this world that doesn’t make sense. God hasn’t necessarily answered all my questions of why. There isn’t anything I can give you to explain these things away and I certainly will never justify the actions of abusers. I do know that God can take our lives and make us a new creation. The pain doesn’t have to always be there and we can come out on the other side alive and new, filled with joy and peace.
During one of my many times of grieving and working through the pain, God gave me an amazing gift that I’ll never forget. It is in the times of deepest prayer and pain that I received the most amazing love from Him. He gave me a picture of myself as a child in His arms. He was cradling me and rocking me like a baby while I cried out my grief. He loves me and He cares about the pain. Even when everything looks dark and there is suffering all around us. When we are in the dark pit, He loves us and wants us to reach up our hands to let Him pull us out and hold us in His arms.
“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. ‘All who rage against you will surely be ashamed and disgraced; those who oppose you will be as nothing and perish. Though you search for your enemies, you will not find them. Those who wage war against you will be as nothing at all'” (Isaiah 41:10-12).
We are in difficult times. We can’t pretend that our nation or our world is okay. We have to be real about what pain is and how we deal with it. My hope is that as we deal with and really look at our own sin and pain, we can be a living example to the next generation. Let’s not hand out platitudes and religion without explanation when we can hand them our lives as a living testimony to the power of Jesus.
When other Christians come up against a wall they can’t climb are we laughing down at them? “Haha, it’s about time you experienced some suffering. Life is hard. You should have made better choices.” This is the time to love and to give. It’s the time to talk about freedom. This isn’t about how it looks. This is about the inward workings of humanity and about the deep pain and suffering we experience.
Are we as Christians telling people to just put on a pretty face and get over it? This is exactly why people break. Because we are telling them to lie about it. Why not let them be a human and cry? Let’s hold their hands through it instead of condemning them. Jesus died on the cross for us. Our pain pushes us toward Him if we let it. I can’t imagine how different my life would be if someone had told me what I am telling you right now. I want you to have freedom in Christ and the strength to protect yourself from things I was unable to see as danger.
